Figure Lore & Legacy
An aquatic emissary of evil, Mer-Man emerged from the original 1982 MOTU wave with a design that was far more surreal than his cartoon counterpart. Sporting a gilled face and seaweed-like armor, Mer-Man stood apart visually, drawing inspiration from swamp creatures and mythic sea beasts. Though he’d later take a more comical turn in animation, the figure’s grotesque, alien features made it one of the more memorable—and unsettling—figures of the line.
Did You Know?
The Mer-Man figure was originally conceived with a drastically different head sculpt—more monstrous and fish-like than the later animated version. Early test molds reveal exaggerated eyes and a skeletal fish mouth. Mer-Man’s sword mold was shared with Stinkor, and the figure body was later reused for multiple characters. The Taiwan soft-head version is the most desirable among collectors, while MOC listings are infrequent, making him one of the tougher early MOTU figures to find sealed.
