Figure Lore & Legacy
Released in 1985 as the flagship figure for LJN’s ThunderCats line, Lion-O embodied the explosive crossover between cartoons and action figure merchandising in the mid-’80s. Designed to mirror his animated counterpart, the figure boasted “Battle-Matic Action” and a rare light-up eyes gimmick that amplified his leader-of-the-pack appeal. As the face of the ThunderCats franchise, Lion-O’s sculpt and interactivity helped set the tone for a toyline that aimed to be both fierce and futuristic—a benchmark moment in the golden age of action figures.
Did You Know?
Lion-O’s figure came in three hair and accessory color variants—orange, red, and maroon—with the maroon version often considered the rarest. The light-up eyes feature only worked with the included battery-powered Power Ring, which is frequently lost or non-functional today. The paint on his hair and the claw shield is prone to wear, especially on the lighter-colored variants, and carded Series 1 versions with the included AAA battery offer a premium among collectors.
